This enables decisions to be directed toward the best possible optimization of investments, costs, revenues, tax profile, profitability, bankability, and, in general, corporate sustainability—including from the perspective of sustainable finance (EU Taxonomy, Sustainability Report, ESG), through the optimal utilization of these factors.

A business project is not a static system. Prices, costs, market conditions, financing arrangements, business strategies, and investor objectives all change.

For this reason, an economic and financial evaluation cannot be limited to producing a single result or representing the company through a rigid model. It must be able to adapt to the complexity of the project, simulate different scenarios, and analyze the contribution of individual activities.

Leverage in Predictive Analytics

Imagine a project with 10 million euros in capex, where all the time spent on financial analysis is devoted to recalculating the financial leverage n times, varying it from 10:90 to 30:70, with thethe goal of reaching the holy grail of a NPV close to 0 (or a WACC of 0.55%, as required by current regulations for projects with public funding) and making the project appealing to the public administration.

Then imagine talking to the investor and discovering that they have a maximum of 100,000 euros in equity to put into the project. The rest remains to be seen. Or imagine the opposite scenario. The investor brings a consortium with them, and they have enough equity to fully cover the investment’s value.

During his interview on Live Social Radio, Stefano Baroncini, CEO and Founder of Atena, highlights the limitations of traditional tools used to evaluate investments, entrepreneurial initiatives, and business strategies. The problem isn’t just about the ability to perform calculations, but above all the difficulty of representing, in a coherent and integrated way, all the variables that influence a project’s evolution. Revenue, costs, investments, financing needs, liquidity, debt, and profitability are not independent elements, but rather parts of a single, constantly evolving system.

We must ask ourselves why the finance sector—which deals with investment analyses involving millions of euros and business models that have a major impact on and carry significant responsibility toward the market and the community—still relies on “do-it-yourself” models in Excel spreadsheets for its predictive economic and financial analyses. The average accuracy of Excel spreadsheets in approximating economic and financial reality is in the range of 15–20%. It’s like photographing reality with an old camera equipped with obsolete lenses that can only produce blurry and unclear photos.
